If you search for an AI interview platform in Australia you will find a lot of confident claims and very few straight answers. This guide gives you the questions that separate a tool you can defend to your CEO, your client and a candidate from one you will regret.
We built Critical Hive, so we are not neutral. We have written this as the checklist we would use if we were buying, and you can apply every point to us as hard as to anyone else.
What an AI interview platform actually does
An AI interview platform runs the first-round conversation for you. Candidates answer role-specific questions (by voice or text, on a phone or laptop) at a time that suits them. The software scores the answers against a rubric and gives your team a ranked shortlist.
It does not replace the hiring decision. If a vendor tells you it should, read the section on regulation below before you go any further.
The 12 criteria that matter
1. Who makes the decision?
Look for a named person on every outcome and an audit trail that proves it. In Critical Hive the AI never rejects anyone automatically: a recruiter or hiring manager advances, holds or declines, and the decision is logged with their name.
2. Can you see the evidence behind a score?
A number is not an explanation. Ask to see the candidate's own words next to each rating and a plain-English reason. Evidence-based scoring lets a hiring manager check a score in seconds, and lets you defend it months later.
3. Is the rubric yours?
You should be able to edit the skills, the weights and the questions. A black-box score that you cannot tune is a liability.
4. What does the integrity report claim?
Be wary of "100% cheat-proof" and of tools that claim to detect AI-written text or deepfakes. A good integrity report lists what was checked, what was not checked, and turns any flag into a question for your human interview. It should never silently change the skills score.
5. Can you test it for bias on your own data?
No honest vendor calls a tool bias-free. Ask for an adverse-impact check you run yourself with your own group labels, and confirm the product never infers gender, age or ethnicity. See our guide to testing AI interviews for bias.
6. How does it treat privacy under Australian law?
Ask where data is stored, which sub-processors see candidate answers, how long data is kept, and how a candidate can be deleted. Our plain-English Privacy Act guide for AI interviews explains what to ask.
7. What is the candidate experience?
Candidates should know how they are assessed before they start, be able to speak or type, practise first, and ask for a human interview instead. Read how to design a fair candidate experience.
8. Does it integrate with your ATS?
Ask what is live and what is not. Be suspicious of long logo walls. Critical Hive offers a Workday connector in sandbox and early-access live mode, CSV import and export for anything else, and Microsoft Teams notifications; we say plainly which parts are early access.
9. Can an agency white-label it?
If you are a recruitment agency, the report your client sees is your brand. Look for white-label interviews, client share links and per-client roles. See AI interviews for recruitment agencies.
10. What does security look like?
Two-step verification you can require, role-based access, separate workspaces, encrypted credentials, an exportable audit log and retention you control. Do not accept "bank-grade security" as an answer; ask for the list.
11. What will it really cost?
Pricing should be per completed interview or a clear monthly plan, in AUD, excluding GST, with overage stated. Our pricing is public, including the free pilot of 8 completed interviews.
12. Can you try it before you buy?
Run it on one live role. A tool that cannot survive a pilot is not worth a contract. You can also sit the interview yourself first with "Try as candidate".
Red flags
- "Our AI picks the best candidate for you."
- A score with no evidence.
- No way to export your audit log or delete candidate data.
- Claims of detecting deepfakes or AI-written answers with certainty.
- No public pricing and no pilot.
- "Bias-free", "fully compliant" or "certified" with nothing to show.
The main types of tool (and which problem each solves)
- Asynchronous AI interviews: candidates answer questions on their own time; the software scores and ranks. Best for volume and for removing phone-tag. This is the category Critical Hive sits in.
- Live-interview assistants: transcription and note-taking during a human interview. Useful, but they do not remove the scheduling bottleneck.
- Chat or SMS screeners: short pre-screening questions. Fast and light, but shallow evidence for skilled roles.
- Skills assessments: tests of coding or technical knowledge. Strong evidence of one thing, weak on communication and judgement.
- Sourcing and matching engines: find candidates rather than assess them.
Most teams need a structured first-round interview plus a way to bring the evidence to the hiring manager. Decide which problem you are solving before you compare brands.
How an AI interview works behind the scenes
Knowing the mechanics makes you a sharper buyer.
- Rubric: a set of skills with weights, and a question for each. You approve it.
- Interview: the candidate answers each question; the system may ask a short follow-up when an answer is vague.
- Scoring: each answer is compared with the rubric. A good tool rates only what the candidate actually said.
- Evidence: supporting sentences are pulled next to each score.
- Report: strengths, risks, a suggested next step, and integrity signals.
- Decision: a person reads the report and decides.
Ask any vendor to walk you through each step on your own role. If they cannot show step 4, you are being asked to trust a number.
Your first 30 days
- Days 1 to 3: choose one live role and one hiring manager who will actually read the reports.
- Days 3 to 5: build and edit the rubric; sit the interview yourself ("Try as candidate" in Critical Hive does this without saving anything).
- Week 2: invite 8 to 15 candidates; compare the shortlist with your recruiters' own view.
- Week 3: review the evidence on the cases where AI and humans disagree; adjust the rubric.
- Week 4: decide with numbers: minutes saved per interview, completion rate, hiring manager satisfaction and any fairness flags.
A demo script you can reuse with every vendor
Ask them to show, live and unscripted:
- Create a role from one of your job descriptions.
- Open a candidate report and show the evidence for one score.
- Show what the integrity report says was not checked.
- Show where a human decision is recorded and exported.
- Run a bias check on sample data.
- Delete a candidate and show what happens to their data.
- Show the invoice for 100 interviews, GST and overage included.
A vendor who can do all seven in an hour is worth a pilot.
Objections your hiring managers will raise
- "Will it replace my judgement?" No: it gives you evidence faster. The decision stays with you.
- "Candidates will hate it." Offer a human alternative and a practice question, then measure completion and feedback.
- "We tried a tool once and it was a black box." Insist on evidence next to every score.
- "Is it legal?" See our guide to the Privacy Act and AI interviews, and take legal advice.
A simple scoring sheet
Rate each vendor 0 to 2 on the 12 criteria above (0 missing, 1 partial, 2 clear and demonstrated). Anything under 18 out of 24 deserves a hard conversation. Weight criteria 1, 2, 5 and 6 double if you hire in a regulated industry.
FAQ
What is the best AI interview platform in Australia?
The best one is the one that passes your own pilot. Judge on decision-making, evidence, fairness testing, privacy and candidate experience, not on marketing. Use the 12 criteria above on every shortlisted vendor, including us.
Are AI interviews legal in Australia?
Using AI in recruitment is not banned, but employment, discrimination and privacy law all still apply, and requirements around automated decisions are changing. Get legal advice for your situation. This article is general information, not legal advice.
How much do AI interview platforms cost in Australia?
Expect either a monthly plan with an interview allowance or a per-interview price. Check overage, GST, and whether team members and white-labelling cost extra.
How long does it take to get started?
A pilot on one role can run within days: create the role from a job description, review the questions, and send invitations.
