AI for matrimony in Australia: how Pakistani and Indian families are using it

For generations, a rishta travelled through aunties, cousins and community gatherings. Now families spread across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth are asking whether AI can help, and where it should stay out of the way. Here is a plain look at both.

A note on disclosure. Khandaan is a separate venture founded by Muhammad Anwar, who also founded Critical AI. We have written this guide from experience of building AI tools, and we link to Khandaan because we run it. You should weigh that when you read it.

Why the old way is harder in Australia

The family network that once made introductions was usually close to home. Today the people who might know the right family are in another city, another state, or still overseas. Many professional families are also short of time: two working parents, a son or daughter busy with a career, and a community that is spread thinly across a large country.

The result is a search that depends on who happens to know whom. Good matches are missed, and well-meaning families spend months passing the same few biodatas around.

What AI does well

  • Turning a wish list into a search. Families describe what they want in their own words: city, profession, education, language, values. AI can translate that into the filters a directory needs, so nobody has to learn the search form.
  • Narrowing a long list. Reading hundreds of profiles is tiring. AI can bring forward the ones that fit what you said and explain why.
  • Working any time. A mother can describe what she is looking for at 10pm after work and have a shortlist in the morning, instead of waiting for the next family visit.
  • Speaking the family's language. Many families mix English, Urdu and Hindi. A good assistant copes with that, and with the vocabulary of rishta, biodata and khandaan.

What AI should never do

  • Decide. Marriage is a family decision. AI should offer options, not choose. Any tool that claims to calculate your perfect match is promising something no software can deliver.
  • Guess sensitive traits. It should work only from what a family has chosen to share, and never infer religion, caste or health from a photo or a name.
  • Hand over private details. Names, photos and phone numbers should stay hidden until both sides agree to connect.
  • Replace the people families trust. A rishta aunty who knows a family's background brings judgement and accountability that a search engine does not.

Meet AI Aunty

AI Aunty is the assistant built into Khandaan, a matrimonial service for Pakistani and Indian families in Australia. The idea is simple: you tell her who you are looking for, and she searches the directory for you.

  • You describe, she searches. Type something like "a doctor or engineer in Melbourne, from a Pakistani family, who values family". She searches the Khandaan directory and shows profiles that fit.
  • Same view as any visitor. She searches the same anonymised listings that visitors can already browse. She does not receive real names, phone numbers or email addresses.
  • Private until both families agree. Photos and contact details stay hidden until both families say yes. Khandaan is built around families, not strangers messaging alone.
  • People are still part of it. Families can search directly, or work with a verified rishta aunty or uncle. Matchmakers can carry an ID-check badge that Khandaan's own team has checked.
  • No promises about outcomes. She helps you search faster. She does not predict compatibility, and she does not make the choice.

How to stay safe on any matrimonial site

Romance and marriage fraud is a real problem, and families are targeted because they are trusting. Whatever platform you use:

  • Keep phone numbers and addresses private until the two families have met, in person or on video.
  • Check identity and employment through people you trust, not only through the profile.
  • Never send money, gift cards or personal documents to someone you have not met.
  • Be cautious if someone rushes you, avoids a video call, or asks to move the chat to another app.
  • Report suspicious profiles to the platform, and to Scamwatch if money is involved.

Questions to ask any platform that uses AI

  1. What data does the AI see? Names and phone numbers, or only anonymised listings?
  2. Does it decide, or does it help me search?
  3. Who is behind the platform, and how can I contact them?
  4. How are profiles and matchmakers verified, and what does a badge actually mean?
  5. Can I delete my family's profile and data whenever I want?
  6. Can I still deal with a real person?

Those are the same questions we think hiring teams should ask any AI vendor, which is why we wrote how Critical AI uses AI. Good AI is explainable, leaves the decision to a person, and is honest about its limits.

What is AI Aunty?

AI Aunty is a chat assistant on Khandaan, a matrimonial service for Pakistani and Indian families in Australia. You describe who you are looking for in plain English, and she searches the Khandaan directory and shows you profiles to look at.

Does AI Aunty choose a match for my family?

No. She helps you search and narrow the list. She does not predict compatibility or guarantee a result, and the decision to take an introduction forward stays with the families.

Can AI Aunty see names, phone numbers or emails?

No. She searches the same anonymised listings that any visitor can see. Names, photos and contact details stay private until both families agree to connect.

Is AI replacing the rishta aunty?

It should not. On Khandaan, families can search directly or work with a verified rishta aunty or uncle. AI Aunty is a faster way to search, not a replacement for a trusted person who knows your community.

How do I stay safe on any matrimonial site?

Keep contact details private until you have met the family, verify identity and employment through people you trust, never send money, and be wary of anyone who rushes you or moves the conversation off the platform.

We do that too.
